True and False Preachers, and The Importance of Believing the Truth

Many Christians are concerned about the condition of the Church of Jesus Christ today. There is growing apostasy in many areas, lukewarm, watered down gospel preaching, and outright deception. I will address these issues.

Many people are in a dilemma about the Holy Laughter and the Charismatic revivals taking place in Toronto, and other places. What do we make of these? Are they genuine? Are they the great apostasy predicted by the Apostle Paul? After seeking understanding from God on this matter I believe there is a passage in Deuteronomy that applies to this.

Most people are aware that false prophets in the Old Testament are supposed to be stoned to death, but another statement will shock many people; some true prophets that God speaks to and gives prophecies to, some of these true prophets teach false doctrines:

1 If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, 2 and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods you have not known) "and let us worship them," 3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 It is the LORD your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him. 5 That prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he preached rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery; he has tried to turn you from the way the LORD your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you. (Deuteronomy 13:1-5)

I will apply the above passage to Christianity; here we have a preacher, he preaches that Jesus is the Christ, he holds crusades and build churches, and God speaks to him telling him what to do; but the man also preaches a false doctrine that will result in people becoming spiritually poor, blind, and naked, such as the "prosperity gospel." Now why would God speak to such a man, why would he answer this man's prayers if he teaches false doctrines that will lead people away from God? According to verse three and four it is because God is testing us to find out if we will follow a man or follow what God has already told us in his Word;

... you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. It is the LORD your God you must follow ...

Even though God speaks to him and performs miracles through him, that does not mean that everything the preacher says agrees with what God says in the Bible. God allows this because he expects us to follow what he has clearly told us in the Bible. Even though we should listen to preachers, to learn from them, in the end, we are responsible for knowing what is right and following God. Therefore, we should not believe everything that a big-name preacher says. Just because God has used a preacher to build churches and get millions saved, does not mean that everything the preacher teaches is correct. He very well could also be teaching a doctrine that will lead you to eventual destruction. He could be one of the true yet false ministers described in Deuteronomy; true ministers that teach false doctrines.

Though it effects all branches of Christianity, the above passage in Deuteronomy fits many Pentecostal / Charismatic preachers especially well. Even though some preachers have miracle healings, even though some preachers having dreams and prophecies that come true, stay far away from them if they teach the wealth gospel, which is a false doctrine that will lead you into spiritual poverty. We must believe what the BIBLE teaches. Anyone that teaches something as being true that the Bible clearly teaches as false, stay away from that preacher.

If you can listen to what a big-name preacher or a denomination teaches without blindly believing every doctrine they teach, then all well and good, otherwise it is best to stay far away from them. One of the worst is the wealth gospel. It is perhaps worse than teaching acceptance of abortion and homosexuality; why would it be worse, because it is far easier to become deceived into believing the false doctrine of wealth than in abortion or homosexuality. The doctrine of wealth will lead to destruction just as surely as abortion and homosexuality, stay far away from it.

The critics of the Charismatic revival, such as Hank Hanigraff, calls it a counterfeit revival, yet how can we explain that people genuinely get saved, delivered, and healed? There have been many documented cases so I will simply take it as a fact for this article.

Notice that the prophets God speaks of have genuine visions, dreams, and prophecies that come from God. Do you suppose that these have done some good to people? Surely, they are after all, genuine results of God's power working through these ministers, but at the same time, these ministers are teaching damnedable doctrines that lead to Hell. So it is that many people are being helped in the Charismatic revival, but if you examine the doctrines they teach you will find many false doctrines, such as the prosperity message. They also teach that Jesus died spiritually and went to hell before he was born-again, and that you must believe this or you cannot be saved.

It is not the purpose of this article to point out all the false teachings of these preachers, much material is already available on that subject; the question is, is this a counterfeit revival or a genuine revival? What is happening today is far more than just a few false doctrines with a genuine move of the Holy Spirit; it is a revival alright, but it is a "Laodicean Revival." We know that the Laodiceans were materially wealthy but spiritually impoverished. At no time in the history of Christianity has Christians been as prosperous as they are today, with large homes, and large churches. But what impact is it having upon the world?

Millions of people have been deceived into believing the gospel of wealth merely because of the working of the Holy Spirit that is in these preachers' ministries. Clearly, the working of the Holy Spirit by itself is not proof that we should listen to or have any association with those preachers. No, the true test is not miracles, the true test is whether they teach correct doctrines.

Should we participate in these ministries because of the good they are doing; even though they also teach false doctrines? What did God say in his Word?; "you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer.... he has tried to turn you from the way the LORD your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you." Do we really want to have any part in the Christian wealth movement then? No.

There are many people that are against anything and everything related to Pentecostals and Charismatics, I am NOT one of those people, far from it. I was raised attending a small Pentecostal church that frequently saw the move of the Spirit through tongues and interpretations. There are other passages of Scripture that describe people who are against any move of the Holy Spirit. Such people have a spirit of unbelief, as such they also teach false doctrines that hinder God's genuine move of the Spirit.

Theologically, I never had a problem with Holy Laughter (Psalm 126:2, "then was our mouth filled with laughter and our tongue with singing.") so I did not call it false. The only thing I saw with it that was a potential problem was the person through which this came into the Church, because he is a big believer in the get-rich gospel. I believe that there are no preachers that teach 100% correct doctrine, therefore, God does use ministers that teach some false doctrine. The problem is, how wrong? The doctrines taught by the Word of Faith ministers will lead to damnation. My concerns about Holy Laughter were confirmed by a prophet from New Zealand, Andrew Strom:

Several of us prophetic types from New Zealand and Australia stirred up quite a bit of controversy several years ago because we did not go along with the "holy laughter" movement that spread through the church at that time. God had actually warned us in NZ about this movement six months before it arrived, calling it a "Laodicean revival." ... (The Coming Street Revival, page 35)

God knows the intents of our hearts and I believe God allows these true ministers who are false teachers to exist to draw away those who do not genuinely desire to follow what God says in the Bible. The people that follow these ministers want to follow God, but only if they can do it on their terms, so they refuse to believe in this or that teaching in the Bible, because it does not fit with what they want to do or how they want to live. The more you refuse to believe what the Bible says, the more susceptible you are to being lead astray by false teachers.

Strong Delusion

God actually does more than allowing us to be tested in whether we will follow God or a preacher; in the New Testament God tells us that those who hear the truth and refuse to believe it will in fact receive from God signs and wonders designed to make them believe that which is false, so that they will be damned. Yes, he did say it clearly:

10 ... They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. (2 Thessalonians 2:10-11)(NIV)

Commentaries water this down by saying God allows or permits people to be deceived, but that is not what it says. It clearly says that there are people that refuse to believe the truth, so God sends them lying signs and wonders so they will have even more reason to believe what is false, resulting in their damnation.

Paul was referring to those who refuse the gospel, but I believe this also happens to those who profess Christianity but who refuse to believe what God clearly says in the Bible, choosing rather to believe what they want. There is evidence that God sends false signs and wonders designed to give people reasons to believe the false doctrines which they want to believe. The end result may or may not be damnation, some will eventually see the light and repent, but others will follow the false ministers into Hell.

For example, Catholics are having weeping statues of Mary, visions of Mary and other signs and wonders that give them reason to worship Mary and believe their false Catholic religion. And so we should not be surprised that similar things happen to others that refuse to believe the truth.

Mormons also have a lying sign which is a burning in the bosom. When Mormon missionaries come into a home they instruct people to ask God to prove that Joseph Smith is a true prophet and the Book of Mormon is genuine scripture. The proof they say will be a burning sensation in the chest. This has been a part of Mormonism from the very beginning (Moroni 10:4), without which there would not have been nearly as many converts. Many foolish people do as instructed and low and behold, they get the burning sensation in the chest. This is a lying sign given to those who refuse to believe without such signs. Jesus said, "an evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign" (Matthew 12:39). That statement strikes me as though Jesus were a bit angry when he said it. Yet, Mormons specifically tell people to ask for a sign, and God obliges because they refuse to believe the truth and be saved.

Sometimes God just tells us to go ahead down the path we want to go, even if that path leads to destruction. During the sexual revolution of the 1960s, people were engaging in "free love." During this time there was a Bible-believing preacher in California who secretly desired to have sex with other women besides his wife. He wondered if maybe sex was not a sin, he dwelled on that thought until he began to believe that it was from God; this is because in his heart he was influenced by the world around him and wanted to indulge his lusts. So he asked God if it was right, "sure, sex is not a sin, go-ahead and have all the sex you want." So he formed his own religion which became a sex cult called the Children of God; also called The Family. The founder was David Berg, also known as Moses David.

There was a preacher who was infected with the idea that financial success was an indicator of success in preaching. Finally one day he had a revelation about the 100-fold return and began preaching it and became what he always wanted, a wealthy preacher. And so he also became an instrument for leading others down the road that leads to destruction, because they refuse to believe what the Bible clearly teaches on this subject. He became a favorite of TBN and even teaches that God will help you find buried treasure.

Some Christians who live in wealth and luxury will have even more money coming to them without even trying. Of course they believe it is just evidence of God's blessings upon their lives, while in fact it is because they refuse to feed the hungry while living in extravagance, so God gives them even more reason to believe they are correct when in fact they are going even farther down the path to destruction.

There is a revival taking place in Toronto which in all practical purposes is getting people saved, healed and set free, yet it is also teaching the false wealth gospel. Need we be surprised then that teeth began being filled with gold back in the 1990s?! The first time I heard about teeth being filled with gold back in 1989 it was my belief that it had to be false; I believed that God does not fill bad teeth with silver or gold, it makes no sense, God would merely give you a new tooth. Who ever heard of God putting an artificial hip in someone with a bad hip? No, God would give only a new hip, so I declared it a falsehood. After it began happening in Canada I reasoned that I must have been wrong, perhaps God is doing it as a sign of his power, his love, to get the attention of the world, or some other good reason.

What really surprised me was that this church is teaching the false gospel of wealth. Now I see the light! My first assumption was correct, teeth that are filled with anything but God's original enamel is a counterfeit. It is one of the lying signs and wonders that give people reason to continue believing the lie of material wealth, which leads to spiritual bankruptcy. It is likely that the same can be said of those churches that have gold flakes falling onto people, they teach this or that doctrine which will lead people astray, therefore God has given them lying signs and wonders.

Some Christians believe they can commit adultery or homosexual acts and still make heaven, others believe they can murder unborn children. When they seek God's approval, they frequently get an A-OK. David Wilkerson relates this story:

There was a minister in Canada who met a "prophetess." How she did prophesy — telling him his ministry would shake nations. She could read him, understand him. Compared to this woman, his wife was "materialistic and unspiritual," so he said. They ended up in an affair with the woman prophesying the whole time, saying, "Thus saith the Lord..." while committing fornication! (Roving Eyes)

Prophesying while in the act of committing adultery, wow! They both must have believed that it was A-OK with God, that he approved of their sin. This is what happens when people refuse to believe what the Bible clearly teaches. There are many false doctrines out there that will lead a person to destruction. Be careful what you believe. Don't seek for a sign, seek God, seek wisdom, seek understanding from the Holy Spirit. God might decided to give someone a sign on his own, that is OK, but do not require a sign before you believe the truth. And never ask God if it is OK to sin!

Many people will refuse to accept this teaching and will say, "how then could we ever know what to believe? How could we know whether we are being lead astray by a false teacher or even God himself? Simple! BELIEVE THE WORD OF GOD! The Bible clearly condemns adultery and excess wealth, yet many Christians show no interest in obeying these commands. Clearly, there are lots of people today who choose to follow what men teach, and so they choose to believe the Scripture-twisting rather than what it clearly says. They will end up spiritually bankrupt and their end will be destruction.

I am sure that there are many clues that will tell you that these preachers are in the true minister yet false teacher category, such as many prophecies that turn out to be false. Sometimes they may just speak from their own minds but other times they clearly tell lies or say "thus says God" when God has not spoken, but Satan. There are many recorded examples of Word of Faith preachers making false statements and outlandish claims. Do a search on the internet and you will find much info about the present-day false teachers. But it is not limited to the Word of Faith movement, it is also found in luke-warm preaching of mainline denominations that reject many teachings of the New Testament, such as tongues and interpretation of tongues.

Positively False

Many Christians only want to believe modern, compromised doctrines, so God has allowed many compromised preachers to give the people what they really want.

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. (2 Timothy 4:3) (NIV)

The positive, happy message was popularized by one fellow in Southern California, and has been adopted by many others, including a fellow in Orange County, California and one in Houston, TX. It has also been indorsed by several Christian broadcasting networks and shows. Positive, uplifting sermons will always result in huge crowds, because it is what people want to hear. The church in CA averages over 20,000 in attendance each weekend on a 120 acre campus and lists over 80,000 names on the church roll. Two of the many sins the pastor does not preach against are homosexuality and abortion. The guy in Houston n must have read the other's book, because he only preaches happy, uplifting sermons and has a church of 18,000 and growing. He states;

"We’re all about building people up. We’re all about helping people reach their full potential. We don’t push some kind of religion.... all we push is joy and peace and victory through Jesus Christ.... We’ve heard a lot about the judgment of God and what we can’t do and what’s going to keep us out of heaven. But it’s time people start hearing about the goodness of God, about a God that loves them. A God that believes in them...."

Clearly the majority of people today do not want to hear fire-and-brimstone sermons, they prefer to hear, "God loves you and has a plan for your life." Sure, God does love us and he does have a plan for our lives, but it is contingent upon our humbling ourselves and repenting! There is no room in the positive preaching for messages about the coming judgment. Why didn't Jesus think of that? He could have been popular and well liked also.

All the great preachers of the past that have ushered in a revival have all been preachers of repentance. The famous sermon of Jonathan Edwards, "Sinners in The Hands of An Angry God," is a prime example. He did not preach "God wants you to be happy," sermons. All the positive, uplifting preachers of today are preaching falsehood, only falling on our faces in repentance will bring genuine revival in our lives and in the Church. Andrew Strom states; "All that is showy, all that is soulish, all that is shallow and that would wrap people up in a warm, positive, "feel-good" cocoon - all this God hates" (The Coming Street Revival, page 35).

The doctrinal statement of the CA church is a very weak, limp dishrag statement which includes; "God has allowed evil to provide us with a choice." Perhaps that is one reason God has allowed false ministers including him. Jesus said few people will find the gate that leads to life,

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. (Matthew 7:13-15)

Notice the verse that immediately follows the statement about the narrow gate and the broad way; it refers to false prophets. Jesus is connecting the broad way with false teachers. Therefore, large numbers by itself is reason to suspect that the preacher is a false teacher.

Be careful which church you choose to join. Be careful which gospel you choose to believe. God help Christianity, it is filled with false preachers and false Christians.
